Walk/Race to Remember Results

By Lionel Green - The Reporter
Published March 09, 2010

Teenagers ruled Saturday at the fourth annual 2010 Hospice of Marshall County Walk/Race to Remember at Snead State Community College in Boaz.

Josh Jenkins, 15, of Boaz, won the 5K race, logging a time of 18 minutes, 53 seconds.

Avery Franklin, 13, of Trussville, earned top female honors for the second year in a row, finishing in 19:36. Franklin is the first female ever to break the 20-minute mark in the event, besting her own record of 20:27 last year.

Hospice of Marshall County officials said the race also broke two other records: participation and fundraising.

Officials counted 991 registered participants and estimated $25,000 in proceeds raised to benefit Hospice of Marshall County, a nonprofit agency providing care for the terminally ill.

Other winners at the event included:

• Morgan Neal, Boaz, 1 Mile Fun Run;

• Sarai Aragon, Boaz, 1 Mile Fun Run female;

• Progress Rail, top fundraising team;

• Therapy Plus, top team participation; and

• DonNeeysa Adams, Horton, top individual fundraiser.

The event’s success thrilled Hospice of Marshall County officials.

“I’m so excited about the turnout for Saturday’s race,” said public relations manager Susan Sanders, who organized the event. “It thrills me on a number of levels. The community came out Saturday morning for exercise, many as a family activity, and, last but not least they also came to support Hospice of Marshall County.

“This year the team competition really took off and helped increase the number participating. Also, once someone participates in this race, they don’t miss the others because it is so much fun.

“Hospice of Marshall County has made lifetime friends through the Race to Remember. We have already started planning next year’s race for the first Saturday in March 2011 and plan on it being even bigger and better.”

CEO Rhonda Osborne was thankful for the community support.

“2010’s 5K Race/Walk to Remember was certainly a race to remember,” she said. “It was outstanding in many ways: the number of participants more than doubled from 2009; the beautiful weather; the community sponsors increased in number and in giving; the number of community volunteers increased; and the amount raised increased significantly.

“I cannot express my appreciation enough … to the many volunteers, sponsors and race participants that made this event possible. It never ceases to amaze me how many people support Hospice of Marshall County in so many ways.”
